There are times in our life when certain issues, events or changes occur, quite unexpectedly and without warning. They can cause immediate distress. They can leave you feeling shocked, saddened and overwhelmed. Such events can put an intolerable emotional strain on you and on your relationships. You be overwhelmed and left feeling that you just cannot cope. It is at times such as these that talking to an experienced counsellor will help you to clarify your thinking. It will help you to look at things differently. An honest, unbiased and non judgmental opinion that can make all the difference.
Previous experience is not a requirement for attending counselling so the answer is that previous experience does not matter. It is my responsibility as the counsellor to facilitate the counselling and ensure that the process runs smoothly.
My experience is that it is quite normal for clients to feel anxious. You will be talking to a complete stranger about something that is very personal but these feelings usually pass very quickly. It is my responsibility as the counsellor to help you to relax and feel comfortable.
This question is rather like asking how long is a piece of string as counselling is an emergent process? I will hopefully be able to give an indication after the initial consultation when I will have some idea of the presenting problem.
The counselling sessions are conducted in the strictest confidence so nobody else will know, certainly not from me, that you are attending counselling. What is said in the counselling room stays in the room.
The initial consultation and subsequent counselling sessions last for fifty minutes for one-to-one clients and sixty minutes for a couple and family.

There is no need to prepare for counselling sessions as such although it is helpful for both you and the counsellor to have given some thought to why you are coming to counselling and what you might want to achieve. The nature of counselling is that it works best when clients are willing and able to share their experience. The onus is on me as the counsellor to respond to what clients are saying and, in so doing, move the process forward.
